A SYMBOL OF RESILIENCE AND BEAUTY
The white waratah, Telopea speciosissima 'Wirrimbirra White', is a rare and captivating
variation of Australia's iconic red waratah.
Its journey from discovery to cultivation is a testament to the beauty and resilience that embodies the spirit of our community and serves as an inspiring emblem for
the Wollondilly Business Chamber.
The Origin of the White Waratah
Discovered in 1967, the white waratah's existence was initially shrouded in mystery. Maintenance men from the Nepean Depot of the Sydney Water Board first stumbled upon this extraordinary flower, which displayed eight stunning blooms. Five of these blooms were picked and distributed around Wollondilly, sparking curiosity and excitement.
One notable figure in the white waratah's history is Thistle Harris-Stead, who, after hearing of the discovery, sought out its location with relentless determination. Despite initial reluctance from the discoverer, Harris eventually obtained the plant's whereabouts from Assistant Forestry Officer, Red Mitchell. This led to limited cuttings being taken and successfully propagated, with some finding a home at the Wirrimbirra Wildflower Sanctuary, where they bloomed irregularly.
The white waratah's journey has not been without challenges. It struggled to bloom consistently and did not produce seed pods naturally. However, the dedication of botanists like Paul Nixon, who experimented with hand pollination techniques, showcased the persistence required to cultivate this rare flower. Despite the initial success in producing seed pods through cross-pollination, further blooming and seed production have proven elusive.
A Symbol for the Future
The white waratah's origins are steeped in both natural wonder and human tenacity, making it a fitting emblem for the Wollondilly Business Chamber.
Just as this flower has become a symbol of resilience and beauty, our Chamber aims to support and empower businesses in our community, fostering growth and innovation amidst challenges. The white waratah's story reflects our commitment to creating a thriving and vibrant business environment in Wollondilly, where every member can flourish and succeed.
As we proudly adopt the white waratah as our emblem, we are reminded of the flower's stunning beauty and the determination required to nurture it. This mirrors our mission at the Wollondilly Business Chamber to cultivate a supportive and prosperous business community, where resilience and innovation are celebrated, and every business can bloom.
